Making Musical Instruments

Constructing and learning about different types of instruments helps make children more comfortable with music. Using materials from the child’s home or neighborhood highlights important concepts such as recycling and the multiple uses of familiar objects.

Children can begin classifying musical instruments into categories, building on their developing cognitive skills. Categories can be based on

  • what the instruments are made of (wood, metal, cardboard, etc.)
  • what kind of action makes the sound (striking, shaking, plucking, etc.)
  • what quality of sounds the instruments create (loud, soft, smooth, sharp, scratchy, echoing, etc.)
